Featured Fit Chick – Kelly

How long have you been a member of Fit Chick Express and what brought you here?  I have been a member of FCE for just shy of 1 year. I found FCE when the studio moved in across the street from where I practice yoga. Yoga is great, but I missed the camaraderie and motivation that comes with working out with others (talking seems to be discouraged in yoga). I still practice yoga, but it is fun to have the balance of both.

What has been your greatest accomplishment since becoming a member of FCE?  Coming to realize that I enjoy doing burpees.

What keeps you motivated? What obstacles have you had to overcome? Since joining FCE and committing to a regular workout schedule I have noticed I sleep better, have more energy throughout the day, wake up for the 6 AM class without much resistance, and I am generally happier.  All of this plus the people keep me motivated.

What is your favorite part of FCE? Having someone else tell me what to do and the people! I work out much harder at FCE than I would if left to my own devices. The “Fun Fridays” workouts are my favorite.

What advice would you offer to newbies?  It might hurt the first few classes, but stick with it, in a short time you will see an improvement in your stamina and a decrease in your soreness after class. Also, FCE is for everyone; do not be intimated. Everything can be scaled and you can go as heavy or light with the weights and as fast (or slow) as your body needs at the time. Remember everyone was new once and it is a very welcoming group of people.

In one sentence, how would you describe your experience at FCE? FCE has provided me with the variety, motivation, and camaraderie that I was looking for in a workout program.

How long have you been a member of Fit Chick Express and what brought you here?  I’ve been a member at FCE for about 4 months. I found FCE when I was looking for a gym that offered high-intensity bootcamp classes, but the FCE community turned out to be nothing like a gym (which is incredibly refreshing!)

What has been your greatest accomplishment since becoming a member of FCE?  My greatest accomplishment has just been being more active. When I joined FCE, I barely exercised (just a walk with my dog in the neighborhood every day). Now I am either working out at FCE or biking most days of the week.

What keeps you motivated? What obstacles have you had to overcome? I am motivated by the other fit chicks at FCE. They work HARD in class and many participate in athletic events outside of FCE even though they all have very busy lives like me. It’s inspiring!

My biggest obstacle since joining FCE has been being consistent with exercise with the constant travel and flux in my life over the summer. I’m slowing building more of a habit of being active into my life, but it’s still a work in progress.

What is your favorite part of FCE? I like how the boot camp classes are always changing, and it never feels like I’m stuck in a rut of the same exercises over and over.

What advice would you offer to newbies?  Don’t compare where you are in your fitness journey with others.

In one sentence, how would you describe your experience at FCE? FCE is a great place to get a quick, intense workout and meet new awesome people!

How long have you been a member of Fit Chick Express and what brought you here?   I started at Fit Chick in February 2017 for my 2 weeks free and joined in March. I heard about Fit Chick from two people, Ann Noble, who I know from First Lutheran Church in Longmont, and Aimee Adams, who I know from the Mead High School concessions team. Both spoke very highly of the program and their enthusiasm made me want to try the 2 weeks free. I had noticed that, since I turned 50, my weight was increasing and my muscle tone was decreasing. I know that, if I want to continue to ski, paddleboard, kayak, etc. into my 70s and beyond, I need to work on my muscle tone, flexibility and balance.

What has been your greatest accomplishment since becoming a member of FCE?  Last year, I did not feel comfortable skiing with my kids.  I felt that I could hurt myself if I fell.  I did not ski any black diamonds and my knees hurt by the afternoon.

This year, we went to Steamboat and I skied for two days and went down some black diamonds.  I could jump from mogul to mogul on the steep slopes with confidence.  My muscles were not sore in the afternoon.

What keeps you motivated? What obstacles have you had to overcome? I feel better if I go and workout at Fit Chick.  I like the Boot Camp one day and Piyo the next day.  My biggest obstacle is getting there in the morning, especially this summer with the kids out of school.  There is a lot of things to get done at home.

What is your favorite part of FCE? I like the Boot Camp to make me work and the Piyo to help my flexibility and balance.  I like that Angie and Bobbie correct my technique (I am not the most coordinated person) and give me a modified option if I cannot do the original move.  I also like how the workouts are different every day.

What advice would you offer to newbies? Come and try the 2 weeks free.  There is no pressure.  You can think of it as “meeting for coffee with the ladies” for a half an hour.  We laugh.

In one sentence, how would you describe your experience at FCE? Fit Chick is a fun challenge.

How long have you been a member of Fit Chick Express and what brought you here?   I started Fit Chick Express about 6 months ago. I came to Fit Chick Express because I was tired of the gym atmosphere and wanted to belong to a place that had women with similar goals and struggled with similar problems when it came to fitness, nutrition and motivation.

What has been your greatest accomplishment since becoming a member of FCE?  I have a better attitude and outlook on my fitness goals.

What keeps you motivated? What obstacles have you had to overcome? What keeps me motivated are the attitudes and women I met at Fit Chick Express. They push you to do your best, to give your best of yourself for yourself. I’ve struggled with “the getting there” after a long day at work and getting home I’ve had to learn to keep myself busy and not sit down on the couch because that is where I would stay. Making excuses for myself that I will do class tomorrow but I love my Zumba classes, my boot camp classes, the instructors and the women that are in the classes. I’ve come to look forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces and the way I feel after the classes.

What is your favorite part of FCE? I’d have to say the Instructors. Dawna with her bubbly and quirky personality that keeps me smiling and giggling all through Zumba class. Bobbie with her, “you can do it, good job, here try it this way” motivation and knowledge. I had fractured my wrist about 2 months ago and have had to make adjustment when in the classes but both Dawna and Bobbie were more than accommodating and helpful.

What advice would you offer to newbies?  Find what works for you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Above all else don’t compare yourself to anyone else. We all have a journey we are on to be a better version of ourselves. It’s one day at a time, one work out at a time. You have to work for it and love the “you” you are now.

In one sentence, how would you describe your experience at FCE? I found a place where I feel I can finally become the healthy, strong person I’ve long to become.

How long have you been a member of Fit Chick Express and what brought you here?  I have been a member of Fit Chick since October 2016 and, ironically, I learned about it from a Facebook tag for my friend Fran Wahl. Little did I know she wasn’t a 6 am boot camp attendee.

What has been your greatest accomplishment since becoming a member of FCE?  Getting back into a regular workout routine – I had gotten out of the routine after a skiing accident that sidelined me for too long, and I could never get motivated to start exercising again.

What keeps you motivated? What obstacles have you had to overcome? I don’t like the early morning alarm, but I love all the fun ladies and the ability to get my workout in before my work day starts. Biggest obstacle — the Snooze button – don’t use it!

What is your favorite part of FCE? Constant variety and laughter.

What advice would you offer to newbies?  Try all the different classes, don’t be afraid if you have never done it before – everyone is very helpful and you just might like it.

In one sentence, how would you describe your experience at FCE? How can you put it in one sentence? – but thanks for putting up with my constant yawning in the 6 am class.

How long have you been a member of Fit Chick Express and what brought you here?  I’ve been a Fit Chick for 6 months and I came seeking to get toned and feel better about how I looked. My friend Raluca has been going to the boot camp classes and she had great results.

What has been your greatest accomplishment since becoming a member of FCE?  I participated in a 10-week diet challenge and learned to eat better and incorporate more veggies in my meals. At the end of the challenge I was happy with how I felt and looked and got lots of compliments on the change. Now there’s no smoothie I’m making at home that doesn’t have spinach or kale in it!

What keeps you motivated? What obstacles have you had to overcome? Seeing the results keeps me motivated. Finding time to work out was a serious obstacle! When I kept hearing health professionals saying one should exercise at least 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes, I thought it would be impossible for me to find the time. I am involved in lots of community activities and have a daily commute into Denver. Now I go to Fit Chick Express at least 3 times a week!

What is your favorite part of FCE? The women community here is extraordinary! We all make fun of how hard the workouts are (and yet we still come for some reason), but the instructors are very encouraging and knowledgeable on how to modify for one’s needs.

What advice would you offer to newbies?  Working out at 6 AM is not that crazy: you get it done early in the day and it gives you the energy and stamina you need to survive a busy day.

In one sentence, how would you describe your experience at FCE? The FCE experience has been the answer to what I needed to push my physical abilities a step further.
