Do you use gelatin?

gelatinAnd no, I am not talking about Jello-gelatin. 😉

A few months ago, when I started looking into all of my digestion issues, my nutritionist at Fit Chick Express told me to start taking gelatin. When I first heard this, I thought she was talking about jello-gelatin. Yea, not the same thing at all. 😉

WHAT is Gelatin exactly?? Gelatin is a protein obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments, and/or bones with water. It is usually obtained from cows or pigs. Sounds nasty eh?? But it’s has so many benefits!

WHY take gelatin??

For myself, I take it to help in gut healing. With all the issues I have had with my digestion this past year, I figure it cannot help. It’s also a great way for me to add protein to my diet with out all added calories.

Not to mention all the things listed below that are GREAT added benefits from adding gelatin to your diet!

  • Skin Health: Gelatin makes up 25% to 35% of the total protein content of human body and this protein content is vital for skin elasticity, and tone, plus the continuous renewal of skin cells.
  •  Cellulite: Cellulite is caused by a breakdown of collagen. Adding gelatin to your diet can help to ensure your body is absorbing the nutrients it needs and keep the cellulite from forming.
  •  Weight loss:  Gelatin is full of protein, which makes you feel fuller, therein they eat less. It also helps detox the liver allowing your body to burn fat more efficiently.
  •  Digestion: Gelatin can help to increase the hyrochloric acid in the stomach which is needed for digestion and assimilation of nutrients. Which in turn helps your body to utilize the foods you eat for what it needs.

HOW do you take the gelatin? Myself, I put it in my smoothies for extra protein and in my coffee. It does have an awful smell, but when added to things, you do not taste or smell it. I tried making some gummy snacks with it, but they tasted awful. Come to find I used the wrong gelatin for them. 😉 Lesson learned! I might try to order the other one and try again as I think they would be a nice high protein snack, not only for myself but for the kids as well.
