“I need to lose 10 more pounds, then I’ll feel better.”
“If I could just get rid of the fat on my belly, I would be happier.”
“When I lose more weight, then I won’t stress so much about how I look.”
We have all said something or thought something to that degree. We strive for perfection. We want to look like someone else. We want to be at that perfect weight and have that perfect body. We look at ourselves and immediately are not happy with what we see, even when others compliment us and tell us we look amazing!
We look back at when we were in high school or college and want to look like that again. Or find pictures of when we were 10, 15 or 20 pounds lighter and wish to be back there. But were you truly happy then? Or were you still thinking you were fat or had too much cellulite or … the list could go on and on.
Even when we set goals and meet them, we don’t celebrate or be happy with what we have accomplished. We look to set more goals as we have found something new that we feel we need to “fix” with ourselves.
We become obsessed with what is WRONG with our bodies, that we are unable to truly live life and just be happy. I, too, am guilty of this and feel the constant pressure of having to look “perfect.” But what IS perfect?
Who decides what is perfect? WE DO! So why not change how we perceive perfect in our world? We can define our own idea of perfect!
Have you ever tried just being HAPPY with where you are? With how your body looks? With all the things you have achieved? My guess is no. It’s not something we know how to do.
When was the last time you went one day without saying something negative about yourself? Honestly, do you even remember? When was the last day you woke up and were completely happy with your body?
So what if today, we decided to be happy with our bodies, with our lives and let that sit for a while. What if we looked in the mirror and said, “I love my body. I am proud of my body.” How would that make you feel? Would you truly feel it when you said those words?
Keep in mind that there are other things that we can focus on that make us feel good and make us happy! It could be that you are a great mother, sister, daughter! You are an amazing and loving wife! You are able to walk, laugh, sing, do whatever you wish! You are a loving and giving friend! You are healthy and strong! We need to stop defining ourselves by our bodies and just truly be happy in our lives!
